Abstract This worked aimed to record the occurrence and morphologically characterize the early larval stages of Gobiosoma sp. captured in the estuarine complex of the Amazon River, in the state of Pará. We analyzed 243 larvae of Gobiosoma sp. sampled by horizontal hauls conducted in the subsurface water column with a conical-cylindrical plankton net (300μm mesh size). Individuals were classified into three stages: pre-flexion, flexion and post-flexion. For each stage, both morphometric and meristic characteristics were analyzed. The larvae showed similar pigmentation pattern during development, characterized by melanophores concentrated in the near the anus and diffuse ones on the ventral part of the body. The swim gas bladder was visible and transparent, with its upper region lightly pigmented. The total number of myotomes was 27. A total of seven spines were found in the first dorsal fin, followed by 12 rays in the second dorsal fin. Eleven rays were found in the anal fin. The standard length varied between 3.0 mm (pre-flexion) and 8.9 mm (post-flexion). In the last stage, larvae showed high elongate body, with increasing number of elanophores (in form of points) throughout the dorsal side. It was also possible to note the presence of four vertical stripes of melanophores. It was observed that these larvae grew allometrically throughout their development, showing features common to Gobiidae and allowing for adequate identification of the genus.
